To promote the launch of the new Tomb Raider game, Rise Of The Tomb Raider, Xbox employed creative and production agencies McCann and Momentum Worldwide to deliver the Xbox Survival Billboard. 8 contestants were selected from 1000’s of applicants to take part in the 24 hour challenge. The concept being they had to stand on a small platform projecting from a billboard whilst enduring some of the harsh weather conditions that the game’s protagonist, Lara Croft faces in the new title.
They would be exposed to not only the natural elements that November in London throws up, but also artificial weather conditions voted for by the public via the on-line live stream:
The last contestant standing would be the winner- the prize being an exclusive holiday inspired by Lara’s travels.
— Liaison with local authorities and TfL as the billboard was a adjacent to a busy road.
— Full event Risk Assessments.
— Collation of supplier Risk Assessments and Insurance as part of a full Health and Safety Audit.
— Sourcing Medical provider for consultation and on-site medics.
— Managing on-site H&S during the site build – including the installation of the custom made billboard structure and SFX.
— Developing in-depth medical risk assessment and welfare plan – the risk of hypothermia was very real.
— Developing contestant disclaimers.
— Creation of Event Safety Management Plan.
— On-site coordination between production teams, SFX operators, film crew and medics.
— Monitoring of contestant’s health and well-being during the show.
— Consultation with medics to decide if contestants were to be withdrawn for medical reasons.
— Show stop responsibilities.
— The show was live streamed by over 200 thousand viewers from across the globe.
— None of the contestants were injured or suffered lasting effects.
— The winner, Adam Carr, survived for over 20 hours.
